Gordon McLauchlan (1931–2020) was well known as an author, journalist and social commentator who cultivated a deep love and respect for the arts and an understanding of his fellow man throughout his long career. He wrote for many newspapers and magazines and published numerous books about the historical, social and political heritage of New Zealanders. In 2019 he was appointed an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit for his services to historical research. He passed away in January 2020 at the age of 89.
