The life and family of a British merchant navy officer, of German background who joins his first ship at age sixteen in 1941 in London. Spends the war on a merchant ship and then two world trips on tramp steamers before getting married in Brighton, England and emigrating to New Zealand. There he joins the Union Steam Ship Co, goes ashore on the wharfs and builds a hillside house in Wellington. With his wife he transforms his life to become a New Zealander, has a family and becomes a builder, painter, paperhanger. "Home is the sailor, home from the sea"
About the Author
Lawrence Robert McCallum grew up in Palmerston North and spent forty years in town planning and resource management in New Zealand. He has published four books, two on George McCulloch of Glasgow, Broken Hill and Kensington and his art collection, an autobiography (A Palmy Boy's Story) and now the life of his late father in law, Merchant Navy Officer. His self published books (printed at Clarity Press, Christchurch, NZ) have gone to libraries and art galleries around the world, Scotland, England, Australia, Canada, USA and NZ). He believes 'everyone has a book within them' but some come out easier than others.
