This book is a biography of Sir Gaven Donne KBE. Sir Gaven was a New Zealander who was born in Christchurch in 1914 and following his schooling, went on to study law at the Victoria University of Wellington. After graduating in 1937, he joined a large legal firm in Auckland in 1938. He then served for four years in the New Zealand Army in the Second World War and after returning to New Zealand in 1945 was soon made a partner in the same firm. His career as a jurist commenced in 1959 with his appointment as a Stipendiary Magistrate based in Rotorua. During his service as a Magistrate, he was seconded as the Acting Chief Judge in the Cook Islands for four months in 1968. He returned to New Zealand for two years before commencing what was to become a long career as a jurist in the Pacific. In 1970, he accepted an appointment as a Puisne Judge in Western Samoa for a period of two years. He then returned to New Zealand and was based in Tauranga as a Stipendiary Magistrate. He was then asked to return to Western Samoa as the Chief Justice in 1972 and served for two years in this position until the end of 1974.In 1975, he accepted the two positions as Chief Justice of the Cook Islands and Chief Justice of Niue. He served in those roles for seven years until 1982. During this period he also served as Acting Chief Justice of Western Samoa for a period of four months. As Chief Justice of the Cook Islands, he presided over the election case in July 1978 that resulted in the sacking of the then government. Early on in his service as Chief Justice in the Cook Islands, he was asked to accept the additional appointment as acting Queen's Representative of the Cook Islands. In 1982, he became the first Queen's Representative, holding that position for two years.In the last years as a Jurist, he became the Chief Justice of Nauru, serving from 1985 to 2001. During this period, he also accepted the position of Chief Justice of Tuvalu and a Judge in the Court of Appeal in Kiribati.

Nicholas Donne is a New Zealand Citizen and resides in Auckland, New Zealand. This is his first book which is a biography about his father, Sir Gaven Donne. Nicholas has lived most of his life outside New Zealand in Kenya, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. He returned to New Zealand in 2015. He is currently writing a second book which is a history about a theatre group in Kenya.
